GAME VIEWING, BIRDING Lochinvar National Park covers 410 km and consists mainly of flood plains on the southern bank of the Kafue River. This is an outstanding bird sanctuary and the World Wildlife Fund has initiated a wetland project here. More than 400 bird species have been recorded and large flocks of ducks and geese are a notable feature. The park also provides sanctuary for approximately 40 000 Kafue Flats lechwe and small populations of blue wildebeest, plains zebra and hippopotamus. Location: Western Zambia; south-west of Lusaka. Access: From Lusaka travel south-westwards on the main road for 186 km to Monze; turn right and follow this all-weather gravel road for 48 km to the entrance gate. There is an airstrip nearby. Accommodation: There is a good self-catering campsite but we have had mixed reports on the service offered by the 20-bed lodge! We were told of plans to upgrade, as well as the rumoured building of a second lodge. As this is a prime location for birders, it is worth checking on new developments. Other facilities: A limited network of internal roads; walking is permitted. There are no shops or fuel supplies in the park. Open: Throughout the year. Beware: Malaria; bilharzia.
